<p>Hyundai is also very close to meeting the target, still two years away, with an average CO2 figure across its range of 131.02g/km.</p>
<p>Publisher of UK magazine Clean Green Cars, Jay Nagley says although the move is a positive step forward, many manufacturers still have a way to go.</p>
<p>Vehicle manufacturers refer to the rate of descent required to meet the new target as their “glidepath”, but Mr Nagley says mainstream manufacturers with a current average much over 140g/km are going to have to work very hard on their glidepath if they are to get their average down within the required time frame.</p>
<p>Presently, the European manufacturer with the most work to do is Mercedes-Benz with an average of 173.83g/km – 20g/km higher than either Audi or BMW.</p>
<p>On average, the industry CO2 emissions rate is falling at 5 per cent a year. In Q1 of this year, the figure fell 5.39 per cent on the same period last year.</p>
<p>In the UK, much of the recent gains are being attributed to government’s vehicle scrappage incentives that have removed many older vehicles from the road, leading people to buyer smaller, more economical cars.</p>

<p>When it was first introduced as a 2007 model, not only did the Compass add a new, entry level price point for the Jeep brand, but it also bucked marque trends, in being the first, car-based offering, eschewing solid axles and a separate frame, for fully independent suspension and unibody construction.</p>
<p>Built of the same GS architecture as the Dodge Caliber, it not surprisingly, behaves much like a small, front-drive car on the road. Steering is fairly taut and precise, with a hint of understeer, while damping and roll are nicely controlled. Jeep claims the Compass is designed primarily for “urban adventures,” consequently, it’s the only vehicle in the lineup that isn’t trail rated.</p>
<p>NEW 2.0L 4-CYLINDER, BUT ONLY FOR ON-ROADERS</p>
<p>New for 2010 is a 2.0-liter “World” four-cylinder engine, rated at 158-hp and 141 ft-lbs of torque. Coupled with the standard five-speed manual gearbox, it’s designed to deliver around 23/29 mpg (city/highway). However, the bigger 2.4-liter engine (which delivers almost comparable mileage 23/28 mpg) is still offered, as is the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and active AWD system with locking center coupling.</p>
<p>Given that this little car/truckster wasn’t conceived with serious four-wheeling in mind, we wondered if it could really hold its own, when the tarmac disappears and the weather gets rough.</p>

Ford has decided to spark up some interest in the orphan of its FG Falcon range the G6 by announcing a Limited Edition version that will offer drive-away pricing and a host of extras at no extra cost.<br />

<p>The model will go on sale this month and incorporates almost $4000 worth of additional equipment into a vehicle selling for a drive-away price of $36,490.</p>
<p>Ford says that when on-road and other costs are rolled into the deal the added value is almost $13,000.</p>
<p>The pricing represents a bargain for buyers as the entry-level Falcon XT, the mainstay of fleets, has a manufacturer’s list price of $39,290.</p>
<p>On the opposition front, Holden’s new base model the Commodore Omega with the 3.0-litre Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) is priced at $39,990.</p>
<p>Ford President and CEO Marin Burela told CarAdvice that while the Falcon range was selling strongly in general and models such as the XR6, XR6 Turbo and the G6E Turbo were “going great guns” the G6 had become a little lost amongst its stronger-selling siblings.</p>

<p>At a media briefing in Melbourne Mr Burela said that Ford had order books on popular models of the Falcon that stretched out to December or November.</p>
<p>He said XR6 models were currently making up about 43 per cent of all Falcon sales while the base XT model had reduced to 15 per cent, which left the balance to the G-Series, the most popular of which has proved to be the range-topping G6E Turbo.</p>
<p>While the new version of the G6 is called a Limited Edition, Mr Burela refused to be drawn on just how limited it would be, although CarAdvice understands the model will be offered until the end of this year.</p>
<p>He said that as G6 had so far only sold in relatively small numbers he did not expect the drive-away pricing to have any significant impact of residuals for cars already sold.</p>
<p>“We believe the G6 Limited Edition will drive sales to this area of out model range and will enhance the G6 and G6E proposition for many buyers,” Mr Burela said.</p>
<p>He also intimated that Ford might look at a simplification of its model range, possibly rolling the G6 and G6E into one model as a result of “lessons that can be learnt from this exercise.”</p>
<p>Mr Burela said there had been strong dealer interest in the G6 Limited Edition and he expected the model to sell strongly over the coming weeks.</p>
<p>Ford says the exterior of the G6 Limited Edition is enhanced with stylish 18-inch G Series alloy wheels, unique colour accent treatments on the upper and lower grilles, fog lamp bezels and rear bumper insert, and a ‘Limited Edition’ badge.</p>
<p>Inside there is an impressive list of new appointments, including side curtain airbags, leather-detailed seat trim, leather-wrapped sports steering wheel with satin alloy audio and cruise control buttons, iPod integration and Bluetooth mobile phone integration.</p>
<p>The G6 Limited Edition will also be available with the optional E-Gas dedicated LPG engine and accompanying four-speed automatic transmission.</p>

<p>Definitely sounds like a somewhat serious subject matter but it looks like the even the more ’serious’ side of Stuttgart has a sense of humor. They produced this viral video and uploaded it online – it’s called “Avoid Surprises”.</p>
<p>In Malaysia, there is no Used 1 commercial vehicle program but there is a passenger car program called “Proven Exclusivity“, which sells used cars that have gone through a 215 point check, are not more than 5 years old and have less than 100,000km mileage.</p>

Volkswagen says the car will be positioned between the Passat CC and the GTI. To keep the sporty nature of the GTI, the car will be powered by a new hybrid drive with a combined power output of 170 hp. The new hybrid drive system combines a turbocharged 1.4-liter, 150-hp four-cylinder gasoline engine with a 27-hp (20-kW) electric motor and VW&#8217;s new 7-speed DSG. This combination enables the New Compact Coupe to achieve 45 mpg and do 0 to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds.</p>
<p>VW chose to use a modern lithium-ion battery in the NCC. The company packaged the 1.1-kWh battery at the rear of the vehicle. Although the NCC can be propelled by electricity alone at low speeds, the small battery size means that it won&#8217;t get too far on electricity alone. To recover some of the spent electricity, the NCC is equipped with regenerative braking, although the system is not as aggressive as that on other hybrids, to enable the NCC to coast for extended periods of time even at highway speeds.</p>
<p>In styling the NCC, Klaus Bischoff, chief designer for VW, tried to portray the car&#8217;s efficiency through an interpretation of VW&#8217;s DNA befitting a sporty hybrid. Complex headlights with LED daytime running lights help give the NCC an immediately recognizable look. The side profile of the vehicle features a sporty, yet elegant merger of past Volkswagen design with modern coupe elements. At the rear, LED taillights further show the car&#8217;s efficiency as well as give a unique look.</p>
<p>Inside the car, the driver and passengers are greeted by a two-tone contrasting interior. The seats are covered in a light &#8220;Berry White&#8221; colored leather with matching door panels and lower center console. The remainder of the interior is done in a darker &#8220;Grigio Quartz&#8221; color. Volkswagen also says the NCC will have the most interior room in its class and the car can handle a weekend for four with ease. As with the CC, the center console is carried all the way to the rear seats.</p>
<p>Switchgear in the NCC will also be familiar as the instrument panel and steering wheel are carried over from the GTI. The center console also retains the 8-inch touchscreen radio-navigation display and familiar climate controls.</p>

&#8220;We envisioned this concept as an automotive personal headquarters,&#8221; said Brian Nesbitt, Cadillac&#8217;s general manager, &#8220;using advanced technology to enable new levels of connectivity and luxury.&#8221;</p>
<p>Certainly, the XTS isn&#8217;t lacking the latter. Cadillac&#8217;s taken to putting &#8220;Platinum&#8221; badges on its most upscale vehicles, and it&#8217;s safe to say this show car takes the nameplate to a whole new level. Cut-and-sewn materials (a hallmark of the Platinum range) run rampant throughout the car, as does laser-etched suede. The dashboard sports few physical buttons or gauges, relying instead on touch-screen organic LED displays instead.</p>
<p>Despite the attention paid to the cabin, designers thankfully didn&#8217;t neglect the exterior, either. Billed by Cadillac, as the &#8220;active evolution&#8221; of its design language, the XTS incorporates the aggressive edges found on the likes of the CTS and SRX, but mixes them with longer lines, which help to soften the sedan&#8217;s form ever so slightly. Although technically a large sedan, the XTS show car is approximately four inches longer than an STS, and four inches shorter than a normal-wheelbase DTS.</p>
<p>Both the high beltline and the large 20-inch wheels help to call attention to the XTS&#8217; all-wheel-drive configuration, but what deserves more attention is what, exactly, is sending power to all four wheels. GM won&#8217;t reveal too much about the powertrain (it is a concept, after all), we&#8217;re told the XTS Platinum show car uses a plug-in hybrid system similar to that developed for the stillborn Saturn Vue 2-Mode hybrid. A direct-injection 3.6-liter V-6 is mated to an electrically variable transmission, allowing the XTS to be driven by the gasoline engine, an electric motor, or a combination of the two. Cadillac says total output is in the realm of 350 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.</p>
<p>Cadillac says the XTS Platinum is simply a concept car, but it&#8217;s no secret the brand is working on a replacement for its aging STS and DTS sedans. Coincidently, the XTS physically slots in between the two sedans. Expect something similar to reach production by the end of 2012.</p>

Possibly the biggest update to the 2011 MKX is Ford&#8217;s latest Duratec V-6 engine. Updating the current engine required punching out an extra 200 cc&#8217;s to 3.7L. When combined with variable timing on all of the camshafts, the result was an extra 40 hp and 30 lb.-ft. of torque for a total of 305 hp and 280 lb.-ft. More impressive is that along with these double-digit increases in power ratings, the MKX retains its claimed class-leading ability to return 25 mpg on the freeway, and does all of this on regular unleaded. A &#8220;smart&#8221; charging system that reduces engine drag and a manually shiftable six-speed automatic transmission help further this cause.</p>
<p>Vying for the title of &#8220;biggest update&#8221; is Ford&#8217;s MyFord and MyLincoln technology, a new user interface for the climate, radio, navigation, SYNC, and other controls. Similar in concept to BMW&#8217;s iDrive and other similar systems, MyLincoln replaces the traditional controls with a touchscreen and a five-way controller similar to those found on cell phones and iPods. A standout feature in the new interface is the touch-sensitive sliders for the stereo volume and fan speed. Rather than traditional push-buttons or knobs, the controls are integrated into the touchscreen and can be adjusted by either tapping a point on the slider bar or by dragging a finger across the screen. The new system also includes Ford&#8217;s iTunes music tagging feature through SYNC.</p>
<p>Complimenting the new center stack and its fancy new infotainment system is a refreshed interior with all-new seats and upgraded materials. Aluminum accents are offered along with two wood trim options, and contrast stitching abounds. Beneath the skin, heavy use of sound-deadening materials and acoustic glass has quieted down the interior so much that Lincoln claims the MKX now exceeds its competitors at Lexus and Audi in noise suppression.</p>
<p>On the outside, the somewhat boxy MKX of yore has been updated with Lincoln&#8217;s new split-wing corporate grille, broad fender arches and new rocker panels. Around the back, new taillights feature hidden LEDs for illumination and hidden rear parking sensors to clean up the bumper. Larger ovoid exhaust tips and new 18- and 20-in. wheels finish the look.</p>
<p>Rounding out the MKX&#8217;s impressive list of updates are several technological features the model has been lacking that should help catch it up to the competition. New features include adaptive cruise control, an emergency braking assist system, hill start assist, a blind spot warning system, a cross-traffic alert system, trailer sway control, plus Ford&#8217;s Easy Fuel capless fuel filler system and MyKey programmable keys. Lincoln has also upgraded the MKX&#8217;s brakes and retuned the shocks, springs, and stabilizers for flatter handling in corners while retaining a luxurious ride.</p>
<p>The 2011 Lincoln MKX is expected to go on sale sometime in 2010 as a 2011 model, but Ford hasn&#8217;t released a final on-sale date or pricing.</p>
